Run Series

What is Run 3?

Run 3 is a platformer set inside a tunnel floating in space. The floor is made of tiles, a lot of the tiles are missing, and you keep running until you fall out into the stars. The twist that made it famous: the tunnel has walls, and if you run onto one, gravity follows you. The whole tunnel rotates so the wall you are standing on becomes the floor, and the gap that looked impossible a second ago is now beside you instead of in front of you.

It was made by Joseph Cloutier, who releases games as Player 03, and arrived in 2014 as the third game in a series that started with Run in 2008. The Flash original died with Flash; the game on this page is the HTML5 rebuild, served from this domain, with the complete level map and all ten characters.

How to play Run 3

  1. Press Play above. The game boots to its title screen; press Play again there.
  2. Your runner moves forward on its own. Left / right (or A / D) slide sideways.
  3. Up or space jumps. Hold it for a longer jump.
  4. Run onto a side wall to rotate the tunnel. Whatever you are standing on is the floor now.
  5. Fall out and the level restarts instantly — there are no lives and no penalty.
  6. Collect the yellow power cells: they buy characters and a few upgrades from the shop on the title screen.

On a phone or tablet the game draws touch buttons of its own. It is playable, but the later Explore tunnels want a keyboard.

The level map

Run 3 is not endless in the usual sense. The Main Tunnel is 65 numbered levels, each a short hand-built stretch of tunnel, and finishing it rolls the credits. Then Explore mode opens the map: dozens of side tunnels branch off the main one — the Low-Power Tunnel, the Winter Games, the Way Back, the Box Storage Area, the River, the Bridge — and most of them tell a little story through the dialogue between the characters at their ends. There are more than 300 levels in total, and an Infinite mode that generates tunnel forever for anyone who runs out.

The characters

Every character changes the physics rather than the look, so a level that stonewalls the Runner can be simple with the right unlock:

  • Runner — the default. Average speed, average jump, no gimmick. Learn the game on her.
  • Skater — fast, with a long low jump. Great on straight stretches, terrible at stopping.
  • Lizard — slow but jumps high and far. Turns wide gaps into hops.
  • Child — jumps again in the air and floats down. Forgiving on bad landings.
  • Bunny — cannot stop bouncing. Fast, high, and only for people who like it.
  • Gentleman — is pulled toward power cells, so he collects them almost for you.
  • Duplicator — spawns copies of himself; if any one survives the level counts.
  • Pastafarian — lays a bridge of light that lets her cross gaps in the walls.
  • Student — toggles her own gravity mid-air with a key press.
  • Angel — a mid-air dash that covers ground nothing else can.

Tips that actually help

  • Look for the wall, not the gap. Nearly every hard level has a side wall with a continuous run of tiles. Rotate onto it early rather than jumping down the middle.
  • Short jumps by default. Tap jump; hold it only when you can see the far tile. Overshooting into the ceiling gap kills more runs than falling short.
  • Change character before you change strategy. A level that feels unfair for the Runner is usually a Lizard or Child level. Swapping is free.
  • Bank power cells early. The Skater and Lizard are cheap and open up the Explore tunnels that pay out far more cells than the Main Tunnel does.
  • Use the restart. Falling costs nothing. A bad first jump is a reason to restart now, not to fight through a level from a bad position.

Run 3 on this site

This build has been served from run3.pro since 2023, at the same address other sites embed it from. It is the OpenFL/HTML5 version of the game with its own fonts, music and level data hosted here rather than on a third-party portal, which is why it starts in a couple of seconds and keeps working when other copies go dark. Play stays free; the page around it carries the site.

Frequently asked questions

Is this the full Run 3 game?

Yes. This is the HTML5 build of Run 3 with the whole level map: the Main Tunnel, every Explore tunnel, Infinite mode and all of the unlockable characters. Nothing is cut down or locked behind a purchase. Progress is saved in your browser, so play on the same device and browser to pick up where you left off.

What are the controls in Run 3?

Left and right arrows (or A and D) move sideways, up arrow or space jumps, and P pauses. That is the whole list. Running onto a side wall rotates the tunnel so that wall becomes the floor — there is no separate gravity key; you steer into it.

How many levels does Run 3 have?

The Main Tunnel has 65 numbered levels, and Explore mode adds well over 250 more across side tunnels such as the Low-Power Tunnel, the Winter Games, the Way Back, the Box Storage Area and the River. Counting Infinite mode there is no real end.

Who made Run 3?

Joseph Cloutier, who publishes as Player 03. He released the original Run in 2008, Run 2 in 2011 and Run 3 in 2014, and later rebuilt Run 3 in HTML5 so it survived the end of Flash. His story is in our Joseph Cloutier profile.

Does Run 3 work on a school Chromebook?

Yes. It is a plain HTML5 game served from this domain over HTTPS, so it needs no plugin, no download and no admin rights. The whole build is about 20 MB and is cached after the first load.

How do I unlock the other characters?

Most are bought with power cells, the yellow batteries you collect in the tunnels. The Skater is cheapest, the Lizard, Child and Bunny follow, and a few — the Duplicator, the Gentleman, the Pastafarian, the Student and the Angel — are unlocked by reaching a specific tunnel or finishing a task rather than by paying. The shop is the cog icon on the title screen.

Why does the tunnel rotate?

Gravity in Run 3 always points at whichever wall you are running on. Step onto a side wall and the view rotates so that wall is now down. It is the core trick of the game: a gap you cannot jump on the floor is often no gap at all from the wall beside it.

My progress disappeared — why?

Run 3 saves to your browser's local storage on this site. Clearing site data, playing in a private window or switching browsers starts a fresh save. There is no account and no cloud sync, so stick to one browser on one device if the save matters to you.
